Artanto Ishaam - Supporting high-growth environments

Portrait of Artanto Ishaam

Internalizing and integrating the Roche operating principles.

I love football! Come Saturday, I am all geared up to hit the vast green fields at 6:00 AM or 6:00 PM and rarely, do I miss a match. My favorite football team is the Indonesia National Team. I admire their dedication in representing Indonesia on the international stage. I never miss their games on television and even try to attend matches in person to show my support.

My dad is my inspiration. He lost a leg in an accident when I was born, forcing him to prioritize providing for me over his own passions. Despite this adversity, he instilled in me the unwavering belief that I should never stop playing football until I physically can't. He never dictated my future, always empowering me to make my own choices.

My career journey

I use a range of tools and practices to facilitate change, provide coaching and training on agile methods, and help navigate roadblocks by serving as a neutral and objective entity. My main skills include significant coaching and facilitation expertise, proficiency in agile frameworks, strong project management, ability to handle conflicts and deliver feedback, and effective communication and active listening skills.

Football, with its dynamic interplay of individual skills and collective effort, mirrors the agile mindset. The constant need to adapt to opponents, react to unexpected events, and seamlessly transition between offense and defense highlights the importance of flexibility, responsiveness, and coordinated movement. These principles, when applied to Agile teams, empower them to embrace change, respond effectively to disruptions, and achieve their goals with greater speed and efficiency.

As an Agile Coach, I can leverage these football strategies and lessons to guide teams towards a more agile and responsive way of working. I have a strong background supporting high-growth environments, having previously guided startups through their early stages of development. For the past three years, I have successfully coached teams within Roche. My unique approach emphasizes genuine curiosity and active listening, enabling me to understand both explicit and implicit needs within the team.I truly enjoy collaborating with colleagues across chapters, as I consistently learn from their diverse expertise. This internal knowledge sharing often eliminates the need to rely heavily on external resources. I particularly cherish the informal moments of connection, especially during offline interactions (such as team building), where we can build stronger relationships and foster deeper understanding.

By consistently reflecting on the 'why' behind my work, I cultivate a mindset of continuous improvement. This allows me to identify more effective approaches when facing obstacles and fosters the agility needed to navigate future uncertainties.

My career tips

  • Our Roche operating principles resonate deeply with me. They provide a strong foundation for high performance, guiding my desired mindset and behaviors. My tip is to truly internalize the Roche operating principles and integrate them into your daily work. You will discover the best ways to apply them in your own unique context, and these principles will provide enduring value throughout your career with the company.

  • In our diverse environment, where perspectives vary greatly, I recommend cultivating active listening, keen observation, and an open mind to avoid premature judgments and hasty conclusions.

  • Mastering the art of effective communication is crucial. This involves discerning when to engage in conversation, when to pause, and when to decisively move forward.

  • Shift your focus from initiating projects to completing them effectively. Remember to maintain flexibility and adapt your plans as circumstances evolve within our dynamic industry.

  • Prioritize your well-being. Remember that no one else will take care of it for you. If you feel overwhelmed, listen to your body, step back, and disengage from work to prevent burnout.
